I Thought We'd Never Speak Again:
The Road from Estrangement to Reconciliation
Laura Davis is the Studs Terkel of her generation. For years she has written books about people-their
struggles, their anguish, and ultimately, their healing. Her classic bestsellers, The Courage to Heal, The Courage to Heal Workbook, Allies in Healing, and Beginning to Heal paved the way for hundreds of
thousands of men and women to heal from the trauma of sexual abuse. In 1997, Davis co-authored Becoming
the Parent You Want to Be, a rich resource guide that helps parents develop a vision for the families
they want to create. Davis' groundbreaking work has been published in nine languages and sold more
than 1.8 million copies.
Four years ago, motivated by the end of a painful estrangement with her mother, Davis began
researching and writing I Thought We'd Never Speak Again: The Road from Estrangement to Reconciliation (HarperCollins, April 2002), which teaches the skills of reconciliation and peace building, one
relationship at a time.
Davis has used her methods successfully in reconciling with her own family-mending relationships
that she once thought were beyond repair. Drawing on her trials and experiences with her mother,
Davis has helped others reconstruct relationships after hurt, betrayal, and rage have torn them
apart. Davis explains, "When I reconciled with my mother, it felt like something inside me that
had been broken was made whole. And that's what I want to share with people. Whether they have a
sister or brother they no longer speak to, an adult child they wish they knew, a parent they long
to make peace with, or a friendship gone sour, I'm here to tell them how to repair relationships
so they can feel whole again."
Davis has been featured on Oprah, CNN, All Things Considered, in the Philadelphia Inquirer, and Time magazine. She lectures and gives seminars on reconciliation nationally, and has built an interactive
online reconciliation community at http://www.LauraDavis.net. A free "Am I Ready for Reconciliation?" checklist and subscriptions to her free reconciliation newsletter are available at her website.
Originally from Long Branch, New Jersey, Laura Davis now resides in Santa Cruz, California with her
partner, her two youngest children, and with cherished members of her extended family.
