As the problem of child sexual abuse has come out of the closet, there is one group that has been consistently overlooked: the partner of survivors—girlfriends, boyfriends, spouses, and lovers. Allies in Healing speaks directly to the confusion, bewilderment, anger, and frustration of these partners. Based on in-depth interviews, Laura Davis offers practical advice and encouragement to all partners trying to support the steps in their loved one’s path to recovery, as well as tend to their own needs along the way. She shows couples how to deepen compassion, improve communication, and develop an understanding of healing as a shared activity.

“This is an essential, long overdue book. Allies in Healing gives partners a clear path for dealing with the survivor’s pain, as well as their own.”
–Harville Hendrix, Author of Getting the Love You Want

“In this wise and empowering workbook, Laura Davis transforms the broad stages of the healing process into practical, tangible steps. With warm support and reassuring guidance, she offers creative and abundant ways for survivors to stay focused, active, and engaged in the process of change.”
— Ellen Bass, Co-author of The Courage to Heal

“A splendid, invaluable resource for recovery. Clear, comprehensive, smart, and deeply human. I recommend it to all male and female survivors, and for the counselors and therapists who work with them. Savor it and respect your own pace.”
— Mike Lew, Author of Victims No Longer

  1. Thank you for this book. I felt alone and lost in dealing with many of the consequences of sexual abuse and I needed some hope to know that yes we can break through the barrier and yes this situation will evolve.
I have one question: what if the survivor developed some narcissist traits? I am worried that I am feeding his ego everytime the issues are talked about. I have the feeling he finds my compassion a way to victimize himself more. How do I break this pattern?
