WRITE, TRAVEL, TRANSFORM: CUBA
A Writer's Journey of Cultural Awakening and Creative Rebirth
Monday, April 13 - Sunday, April 26, 2026

This transformative journey offers an in-depth immersion into the soul of Cuba through the eyes of its people. You will observe, participate in, and experience the spirit that pulses through every aspect of Cuban life, from the sacred rhythms of Afro-Cuban batá drums to the profound literary traditions that have shaped a nation.
It is impossible to visit this captivating island without being moved by the passionate devotion Cubans show to their art and music, their unwavering sense of community. With its roots deeply embedded in African, Spanish and some indigenous Taíno influences, Cuban culture is a living tapestry that weaves together revolution and resilience, tradition and transformation, struggle and celebration.

Since the triumph of the Cuban Revolution in 1959, there has been a dynamic and sustained movement throughout the island to elevate the arts as essential to human dignity and social progress. The cultivation of literature, music and visual arts has been at the forefront of this cultural renaissance, creating a society where poets are celebrated as national treasures, where neighborhood rumbas become sacred ceremonies, and where the written word carries the power to instigate and inspire.
The Creative Arts in Cuba
This culturally rich retreat will introduce you to the Cuban philosophy and practice of creativity as a revolutionary act, deeply rooted in tradition yet reaching toward the future.
In Caribbean culture, storytellers and musicians have long been revered as the keepers of collective memory and wisdom. With the challenges of economic isolation, these traditional and contemporary artists have not disappeared, but have become even more essential to community life and cultural continuity.

Your guides into Cuban literary and cultural life include local historians, artists and cultural practitioners who have dedicated their lives to preserving and sharing Cuba's treasures. From the groundbreaking women of Obiní Batá, the first all-female group to play the traditionally male-dominated batá drums, to the passionate voices at Cuba Libro, Havana's LGBTQ-safe English-language bookstore cooperative, you will be immersed in the creativity that permeates every aspect of daily life in Cuba.

About the Writing on this Trip

This is primarily a cultural tour of Cuba, enhanced with daily writing to enrich your travels and record your cultural exploration. Writing will feed and support your journey, but this trip will not provide a deep dive into writing or time to make significant progress on a writing project of your choice.
There are no writing qualifications or benchmarks to qualify for this trip. If you enjoy writing and are open to daily writing in a group to enhance your travel experience, you’re welcome to join us.

In our classes, Laura will teach you the basics of travel writing, and we will focus on honing our skills of observation and descriptive writing. She will also guide you in using writing to document the thoughts, feelings, and insights that arise as we explore Cuba.
Our focus will not be on craft or polishing work to completion. This is not the trip to take if your goal is to hole up to finish your book or to primarily dive deep into your writing.
This is adventure travel and a personal pilgrimage with a deep creative bent.
What You Will Learn

You will learn about the history and evolution of Cuban literary traditions through experiences that honor the island's revolutionary heritage, as well as its complex relationship with figures like Ernest Hemingway, whose Cuban home at Finca Vigía offers insights into the international literary community that once flourished here. Every Cuban grows up knowing the poetry of José Martí and the works of writers like Dulce María Loynaz, whose home we may visit during our exploration of Havana's literary landmarks.
Spiritual and cultural celebration is an integral part of Cuban daily life. Through workshops on Santería, Cuba's most widely practiced spiritual tradition, lectures on Afro-Cuban culture, and hands-on experiences with traditional music and dance, you'll discover how these practices serve both as artistic expression and community bond. You'll participate in salsa lessons at the community art school Korimacao and learn about the sacred songs of the Orisha tradition during our batá drum workshop.
Our exploration into Cuban culture will be accompanied by daily writing workshops with acclaimed author and master writing teacher Laura Davis, providing participants with the opportunity to capture their experiences and integrate their discoveries while benefiting from the support power of an intimate writing community.
From the cobblestone streets of Habana Vieja, where we'll walk in Hemingway's footsteps, to the pristine wilderness of Ciénaga de Zapata National Park, where we'll paddle among flamingos in the mangrove lagoons of Las Salinas, each location we visit will offer beauty and inspiration. We'll hike jungle trails like Enigma de las Rocas with its crystal-clear cenotes, and La Batata in the Escambray Mountains, where we might spot Cuba's national bird, the Tocororo. In the beautifully preserved colonial city of Trinidad, we'll climb the towering Manaca Iznaga, at 135 feet, the highest slave lookout tower in the Caribbean, and learn the history of the Valle de Los Ingenios sugar plantations.
We'll connect with Cuba's sustainable future at an organic farm where French-trained chefs will teach us their agricultural practices and culinary arts, and discover the artistic vision of Fusterlandia, a Gaudí-inspired neighborhood art installation that transforms ordinary streets into extraordinary galleries. At the Museo Girón, we'll confront the complex history of the Bay of Pigs invasion, and at Cuba Libro we'll engage in open dialogue about contemporary life with local voices rarely heard by international visitors.
Join us for this life-changing adventure. Let Cuba's indomitable spirit will challenge your assumptions, inspire your creativity, and open new pathways to understanding our shared humanity through the written word.

Frequently Asked Questions
Recent news coverage has suggested that new travel restrictions to Cuba have been implemented by the U.S. government. We want to clarify that no actual changes have been made to current travel regulations.
The legal framework for travel to Cuba remains exactly as it has been—with licensed categories of travel, such as Support for the Cuban People, still fully permitted.
- Travel to Cuba is still legal for U.S. citizens and residents under approved categories.
- The Support for the Cuban People license, the program under which our tour is organized, remains in effect and allows independent, flexible travel.
- The term "tourism" (i.e., unlicensed beach vacations) remains restricted, as it always has been. This is not a new policy.
- Cuba's new e-visa system, which took effect July 1, 2025, is a modernization measure—not a new restriction.
Unfortunately, the way the announcement was framed, along with amplified coverage in some media outlets, has caused unnecessary alarm. Please rest assured: there are no new barriers to legal travel to Cuba.
We will be meeting at our Havana lodging on April 13, 2026 at 4 pm. We will provide the specific details of our meeting point to participants closer to the retreat.
Everyone will arrange their own round-trip flights to Havana’s Jose Martí International Airport. Most flights to Jose Martí International Airport arrive from Miami but some do arrive from Tampa, Houston, New York, Los Angeles, Dallas, Chicago, and other airports. We recommend landing in Havana well before the start of our introductory meeting so that you have plenty of time to get into the city and settled into our lodging.
On Sunday, April 26, 2026, you can fly out at any time. You will need to leave our lodging about 3.5 hours prior to your flight departure, so plan your return flight schedule accordingly.
We will stay in a variety of accommodations in three different locations. In Havana, we will stay in small, boutique hotels or a large, modern, tourist-oriented hotel. In Playa Larga, we will stay in casas particulares, family-owned B&Bs in which we will have opportunities to meet and interact with the hosts and get to know the local community more intimately.
In Trinidad, we will stay either in casas particulares or a small hotel. All forms of accommodation will have hot water and electricity, and some may have WiFi.
Cuba is generally considered safe for tourists, and some consider it the safest country in Latin America. The rate of violent crime is very low, but petty theft and scams targeting tourists are common, especially in crowded tourist areas. It is important to practice common sense and maintain a watchful eye over your belongings. We’ll provide safety guidelines to everyone who enrolls in the trip.
This trip is moderately active, with some walking or other activity every day, generally for 3-6 hours. We will have eight days of moderate walking in rural and urban settings, on pavement, dirt roads and some paths. Four days we will be hiking, three of which are about 3-4 miles, without much elevation gain or loss. The other hike is longer and a bit more difficult, 7-8 miles with a couple of steep uphill and downhill sections. It is possible to do all or part of this longer hike or to opt out entirely. The surfaces on our hikes will be a combination of dirt paths and dirt roads, which could be slippery if wet.
We will also be taking two dance classes, which could be rigorous.
On any of these days, if you do not feel up to participating, you will have the opportunity to stay in the lodging or explore the local area on your own, or you may come with the group and sit out that activity.
To be most comfortable on this trip, you should have a regular walking routine on a variety of surfaces, and include different types of cardio such as hiking, bicycling, dancing or swimming; strength training; and flexibility programs such as yoga, pilates, barre and stretching.
If you have any questions about how to begin this type of exercise, you may reach out to Andre through the contact form at the bottom of this page and she will share some suggestions and resources. You might also look into fitness programs or classes at your local community center, private gym, YMCA, etc.
The food in Cuba is authentic, fresh, and flavorful traditional home-style cooking, with a growing popularity of farm-to-table style restaurants. Lunch and dinner generally consist of fish, seafood, pork, and occasionally other meats, with rice, beans, root vegetables, and salads on the side. Classic Cuban dishes include: Ropa Vieja, a stew of slowly cooked shredded beef in a tomato-based sauce with peppers and onions; Tostones, green plantains, flattened and fried; Yuca con Mojo, boiled cassava served with a tangy sauce of olive oil, garlic, and citrus juice; and Moros y Cristianos, black beans and rice cooked together, also known as "Congri.” Traditional breakfast includes eggs, fresh fruit, toast, sometimes cheese and deli meat, and a sweet guava paste called mermelada, as well as freshly squeezed juice and strong, Cuban coffee.
Vegetarians will enjoy rice, beans, root vegetables, salads, eggs, and cheese. Pasta, pizza, and vegetable soups are also available.
If you are a strict vegan, you may want to consider bringing supplemental food such as protein bars, powdered peanut butter, or protein powder that can be mixed with water, nuts, etc.
If you are gluten-free and enjoy bread products, you may also wish to bring some supplemental food.
Cuba in April averages in the 70s to high 80s and even low 90s. April is the end of the dry season, so it generally is not that rainy, but you always have to be prepared for rain. It will be cooler in the mountains, perhaps by as much as 10-15˚, and nights do cool off, generally into the 60s.
We will take a minimum of 8 people and a maximum of 14. If we have 10 or fewer people on the trip, there will be a Small Group Supplement fee due with the final payment.
Yes, we require travel insurance that includes trip cancellation and medical coverage to protect your investment in the trip.
It is never too late to purchase travel insurance. However, to cover pre-existing conditions, insurance must be purchased 14-21 days after you pay your initial deposit (Part 1 of our registration).
If you are buying your own insurance, be sure to read the fine print as policies can differ greatly. Confirm with your insurance provider what medical issues and illnesses are covered. No policy covers all travel risks so check your policy carefully and ensure you understand who will pay for additional costs if incurred.
We will send information about purchasing insurance after you register. Our travel agent can also assist you in finding and purchasing a travel insurance policy that meets our requirements and your particular needs.
Your health—and the health of other group participants—is important to us. If you're showing signs of illness when the trip begins, you will be asked to take a Covid test. We may also arrange for you to be examined by a local physician to provide medical clearance before you join in group activities.
If you become sick during the trip, we will assess the situation and support you in getting medical care if needed. Anyone showing signs of a respiratory illness will be required to wear a KN95 or N95 mask whenever you are around other people.
In addition, if you have a contagious illness that could put others at risk, you may be required to isolate and, in some instances, leave the trip early.
If you do need medical care, you’ll be responsible for any related costs. Now more than ever, it is essential to secure travel insurance. You may purchase your insurance through our travel agent or choose a company of your choice. We will provide information about buying insurance upon registration.
There are six single occupancy room spots on this trip. They will be available on a first come basis.
It is also possible to book a double with a spouse, friend, or family member. We have eight spots available for doubles; the rest of the rooms at the retreat will be singles.
We will try to match you with a roommate if you do not already have one in mind. If we are unable to match you will a roommate, you will be upgraded to a single and you will need to pay the Single Supplement fee.
Absolutely! We love hearing from potential participants and answering any questions you might have. Feel free to contact us using the contact form at the bottom of this page.
