I blew the whistle on the owner of La Posada. I was Managing this facility in the 1970’s when it first opened and was head hunted from my position as Manager of Retirement Inn of Fremont. I had just left my husband of 46 years and always wanted to live in Santa Cruz. We had a mobile home at De Anza Mobile Home Park and accepting a full time position here was answer to prayer.
I also was interested in learning more about HUD and this facility had both Market Rate and HUD residents. It was not revealed to the residents who was in each category. I settled in and had to hire new staff. It was the first time I’d had to terminated and re-hire as a Manager and I found that part of my being Manager very uncomfortable.
dAs I began to fill the Inn, I realized the owner was contacting the Market Rate Residents Children and helping them change their parents monies over to them so they could qualify for subsidized apartments. I had quite a long list of those waiting for HUD and was appalled when I discovered this. I immediately called Sacramento and blew the whistle on him. Apparently he had built La Posada for his Mother who was a resident there and had successfully transferred her monies over to his bank so she could qualify for subsidized housing. When Sacramento got wind of his actions they showed up at our building and we all got fired. This was devastating for me as I had the job of my dreams in the City I wanted to live in. I fell to my knees on the sand at the God.” Now What God?”
A deep loud voice responded to my plea. “Go Back to San Jose and start your own Company”. So I did just that. I opened Crossroads. I had 8 branch offices in the Bay Area. It was a Temporary Staffing Company. Even though this is not what I’d gotten my Bachelors Degree in (Social Services/Gerontology}, I was able to include Career Counseling into my agenda. I specialized in Mid-Life Career Changers and Crossroads boomed. I was able to comfortably retire to my beach home . Lived there 37 years. My daughter and spouse live there now and I reside 5 years now at Dominican Oaks. I love it here. Even though we’ve been sheltered in place 9 months, I feel safe and cared for totally. So the mistake I made was not doing my homework and researching the owner of La Posada before I jumped into that dream job.; but look at the outcome. Besides retiring very comforting, I met and married my second husband who traveled me all over the world and left me very well covered with an awesome Long Term Care Policy that pays all buy $700 per month. Life is beautiful.
